Pauquette Addiction Research and Recovery Center

The Pauquette Addiction Research and Recovery Center (PARRC) offers a full range of outpatient treatment and evaluation services to adults, adolescents and children whoPARRC suffer from alcohol or substance abuse and addiction or the effects of substance abuse problems in the family. These services include counseling for individuals who suffer directly from alcohol or drug abuse or dependency, counseling for family members affected by alcohol or substance abuse, counseling for children of alcoholics issues, and counseling for co-dependency issues. Supportive services are provided for recovering substance abusers, alcoholics and addicts, including relapse prevention. PARRC also provides treatment for compulsive gambling and other addictive behavior.

In addition, PARRC also provides state-mandated assessment and counseling services for persons arrested for driving while under the influence of intoxicating substances or teenagers who have been apprehended because of underage alcohol use.

A partial list of some of the addictions services that are offered at PARRC is provided below.

Affected Family Member, Children of Alcoholics and Codependency Counseling

The long-term result of living with an addicted individual, either as a child or an adult, is a condition called “co-dependency.”  This condition often results in difficulties with chronic anger and resentment, difficulty in trusting others, difficulty in developing healthy and satisfying relationship with others, and can lead to other emotional or behavioral problems. Growing up in a family that has been affected by substance abuse and addiction can leave lasting emotional scars and can affect behavior patterns and personal relationships into adulthood. Sometimes, without professional treatment, the effects of co-dependency can continue to hurt the family even if the addict stops using substances. These services are provided to aid family members, both adults and children, in developing personal insights and new ways of dealing with and living with an addicted person and to heal from the effects of family addiction.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Assessment

The substance abuse treatment staff of PARRC provide comprehensive screening and evaluation services to assist patients in determining the needs for other services and to assist in treatment planning.  These services include psychological testing, when appropriate.  Assessment for other possible mental health difficulties can be a part of the assessment process.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling

A wide range of outpatient substance abuse treatment programs are offered at the Pauquette Center for patients with primary alcohol or drug abuse problems and for patients who may have other mental health difficulties (such as depression, anxiety or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder)  in addition to their substance use problems. Services are offered to individuals as well as to family members.  Both individual and group  treatment programs are available, depending on the patient's needs.  Services are available to people of all ages.

Basic Issues Group

This group is and educational program provided for persons have been arrested for offenses related to alcohol or drug use (typically, first arrests). Most participants have been referred because of intoxicated driving convictions. Participants receive information on the effects and potential negative consequences of substance abuse, strategies for preventing relapses (for those who intend to abstain from substance use), interpersonal relationships, and corrective thinking.

Behavioral Addictions Counseling

Treatment is provided for such behavioral problems as smoking, gambling, internet addictions, eating disorders, workaholism, compulsive spending and sexual acting-out.

Compulsive Gambling Treatment

Compulsive gambling is a progressive disorder resulting in an uncontrollable preoccupation with and an urge to gamble. It is a disorder which is likely to become worse if untreated. The results can be devastating to the gambler and his or her family and can be as debilitating as alcohol or drug addiction.  How do you know if you or someone you know has a problem with gambling? If gambling activities interfere with work, family relations, moods, finances, or leads to lying to others, stealing, borrowing money or an urge to continue gambling, you or the person you know may have a problem.

Relapse Prevention

Periodic relapse is not uncommon for individuals struggling to recover from substance abuse and addiction.  Approximately one third of all individuals who attempt recovery and to work to achieve abstinence enjoy permanent abstinence after their first serious attempt at recovery. Another third have periods of brief relapse episodes but eventually achieve long-term abstinence.  An additional one third have chronic relapses and encounter long-term difficulties. Predictable and identifiable warning signs that begin long before a return to use occurs mark the relapse process.  Relapse prevention therapy is a systematic method of teaching recovering patients to recognize and manage relapse warning signs and provides individuals with the personal tools to interrupt the progression of relapse early, to return to the process of recovery and to become more successful in their efforts to achieve health and sobriety.

Second Offenders Group

This group is designed for persons who have had two or more arrests related to drug or alcohol use.  Typically, group members have been referred because of intoxicated driving convictions or from a probation or parole office.  Some participants choose to join the group on a voluntary basis.  Members receive information on the development and progression of substance abuse problems, relapse prevention, corrective thinking, stress management and spirituality.
